FROM MAP WORKING GROUPS
Employment and training

On November 30th, 2007 MAP, workforce development agencies, School District and City Council representatives, and manufacturers, met to discuss opportunities in employment and training. The meeting focused on MAP’s upcoming Human Resources Workshop; this workshop is designed to help companies better understand potential employees and the strategies that exist to help with retention.

The group has also designated an outreach committee to work on marketing strategies for manufacturing jobs to the workforce. With a presence in the school district and workforce development agencies, MAP can spread the word (i.e., job openings and job training) to the ready and willing.

Industrial land preservation

MAP continues to push the importance of industrial land on City leadership. Continuing our effort with the Department of Commerce, Philadelphia City Planning Commission and Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, MAP has been updating City Council offices on the importance of industrial land with a review of our white paper.

The group is seeking additional protection for industrial areas, and is enhancing the City’s current change-of-use guidelines, or, the regulations for changing a parcel’s zoning. New districts and a strong marketing program are also on the group’s agenda for 2008.

FROM CITY HALL
PRIDE continued

For the last decade Port Richmond has had PRIDE in its corner, improving neighborhood services, organizing clean-ups and bringing businesses and residents together. Receiving approval for renewal from City Council, the community can look forward to another seven years of service. PRIDE’s continuance begins December 13th, 2007.

Ex-Offenders have double worth

A new bill is moving through City Council with strong support: The Philadelphia Re-Entry Employment Program, with Michael Nutter’s endorsement, is quickly becoming popular for the unemployed and under-staffed. If passed, this program will set new highs for ex-offender tax credits: up to $10,000 in credits for companies willing to aide the re-entry process. MAP has offered support, knowing that it could save companies in Business Privilege Tax. This could be a great opportunity for business looking to cut tax expenditures and find a new hire - look to MAP for more details.

And don’t forget…
A new Mayor and several new City Council members take office January 7th, 2008. MAP has had the opportunity to discuss the manufacturing community with new Mayor Michael Nutter, and we look forward to working with new Council members Bill Green (At-Large), Curtis Jones Jr. (4th District), and Maria Quinones Sanchez (7th District).
